Where to Eat, Drink & Carouse in St. Barts

October 15, 2021

St. Barts – also known as St. Barths, St-Barth, and Saint Barthélemy – is a little piece of paradise in the French West Indies which blends the worldliness of St-Tropez with the laissez-faire Caribbean lifestyle. Despite being known for its celebrity sightings and socialite soirees, the island manages, despite the glitz, to retain an exclusive yet totally unpretentious feel. St. Barts has long been heralded the ultimate winter destination, and with its specific brand of laid-back luxury, you instantly see what makes St. Barts such a coveted getaway. From the moment you land by-way-of one of the most remarkable airport experiences in the world – a short beachfront airstrip, you’ll feel like you’ve joined one of the world’s most exclusive clubs and find yourself instantly hooked.

The Island Icons
Contrary to its façade, nightlife on the island is surprisingly casual and more relaxed than one initially imagines. If an afternoon (or night!) carousing among a more vibrant scene is your definition of a good time, then head to St. Jean, where the iconic hot spot Nikki Beach, a vision of simplistic luxury with its all-white, plush sunbeds and chic drapers, offers both a laid back beach club and table- dancing day party, complete with bottle service, model-esque waiters and oversize magnums.

The Sand Bar at Eden Rock, one of the most celebrated hotels on the island and social focal point, is the gastronomic heart of the hotel and is nestled into the crystal waters of the surrounding bay. It’s laid-back shoes-optional atmosphere and wrap-around views of the ocean make it the ultimate good- time-guaranteed spot.

For the View

Le bar du Fouquets at Carl Gustaf is perfect for people who want something hip and trendy yet private at the same time. Its unique and uncompromising view of the Gustavia’s port and Caribbean Sea is the spot of choice for admiring the sunset and yachts in the distance. The terrace becomes a stylish balcony, poised to watch darkness fall. Amid the gentle Caribbean breeze above the palms, renowned cocktails are served by Emanuele Balestra including a saffron Caipiroska, a sage Margarita, a chamomile Negroni, and the infamous Bloody Majestic.

Sand Between Your Toes Dining

Looking for something low-key? Located at the eastern end of the mythical beach of Saint-Jean, you’ll find GYP SEA, a highly anticipated new opening where you can grab a table in the sand, order a cocktail from the Rum Bar, and go for a swim while the chef prepares local and seasonal produce upon a barbeque. Everyone around you – no matter what time of day – will be sandy and shoeless.

Somewhat of an institution in St. Barth, Shellona brings the taste of the Cyclades to the island. Located upon a beach named after the thousands of shells that line the bay, you are invited to immerse yourself in the unashamedly cool surroundings. Sip a cocktail or two from your serviced sunbed and watch the sunset go down! Of course, if you’re after a livelier atmosphere, head back to Nikki Beach.

Best of Beachfront Fine Dining

Sereno Al Mare has some of the best food on the island and amazing views over Grand Cul de Sac. Taking advantage of its dramatic surroundings, the fully open-air concept gives guests panoramic views of the ocean. Craft cocktails and detox elixirs are served alongside chef Lenzi’s Italian menu – which focuses on fresh, local ingredients. One of the best the island has to offer in beachside dining, it is the perfect place for savouring sunsets and extraordinary cuisine.

The Heart of the Island, Gustavia

When the sun sets, the island really starts living up to its glamorous reputation. One of the local favourites is La Guerite, a Mediterranean restaurant that has transported the seductive charm of its sister restaurant in Cannes to the idyllic setting of Saint Barthélémy. While seafood tends to dominate in the area – and rightfully so – you can also get incredible Japanese food at Kinugawa – a breath- taking fusion of Parisian and Japanese culture. The restaurant is nestled in the bustling heart of Gustavia’s rue Jeanne d’Arc. On your way in, take advantage of the views and order a signature cocktail to sip (slowly!). Better known for its music, dancing and outstanding cocktails, Bagatelle – an offshoot of the original in New York – also offers a compelling menu and with that view of the marina – who would want to move!

Places to Watch 2022
A reflection of the islands authentic and cherished atmosphere of casual luxury, comfort and elegance, Rosewood Le Guanahani St. Barth has been a highly anticipated opening. Situated amongst palm trees, sweeping beaches and a reef-protected lagoon, Rosewood Le Guanahani St. Barth will join Rosewood’s portfolio of Caribbean and Atlantic properties (send reviews please!).

So, while other islands can at times seem like they are relinquishing themselves to tourism, and in the process losing some of its local charm, St Barth’s has always been, and still is, unreservedly cool and
authentic – like a Parisian girl who doesn’t give a f**! about impressing the boys because she knows she had them at hello! We highly recommend you visit our recommended day and evening hot spots and let us know what you think and your favourite mixes in the comments below!
